House Explosion in West Haverstraw [SLIDESHOW]

West Haverstraw - 1:38PM: A home on Zarriello Lane exploded following a gas leak.

According to initial reports, Firefighters were at the door of the townhouse when the explosion occurred. The explosion caused large gas-fed blaze and evacuations of nearby homes.

At least two West Haverstraw firefighters were injured. A medevac was initially called to transport them to a hospital, but for reasons unknown at this point, were taken by ground to Westchester Medical center in serious condition.

According to Rockland Emergency Services Coordinator Gordon Wren Jr., a gas main ruptured and the gas went into the sewerage system and seeped into the houses.

Sources tell us, that a road construction crew hit a gas main while digging. That prompted firefighters to start telling homes to begin evacuating, and were standing in front of the home located on Zarriello Lane, when it exploded.

UPDATE 2:07PM: Over 100 homes have so far been evacuated. Numerous fire departments have been dispatched for mutual aid assistance.
