Fire Chief Deems Brooklyn Building Fire Suspicious

A suspicious blaze broke out in a Brooklyn building Sunday morning, drawing more than 100 firefighters and halting some subway service, officials said.

The fire at 8501 New Utrecht Avenue in Bensonhurst started around 7 a.m. and was battled by about 135 firefighters for over two hours, Chief of Department James Leonard said.

“The fire is suspicious,” Leonard said. “There was an unoccupied building with heavy volume of fire.”

There were no injuries.

The flames also damaged the subway in the area. Officials canceled northbound service on the D subway line and southbound trains were bypassing the 18th Avenue station.
